In December 2024, OADP along with a coalition of 128 non-profit, faith based, social justice, civil liberties, human and civil rights, and academic organizations across the United States, put together a petition asking for President Biden to commute the sentences of the 40 people on federal death row. This letter (attached below) was sent and on December 23rd, the president signed an order for 37 of the individuals to have their sentences commuted to life without parole. In 2020, President Biden became the first president to openly oppose the death penalty, and with this groundbreaking action, he has cemented his legacy as a champion of racial justice and morality. While the fight to repeal the death penalty continues, we celebrate this step as a vital one in rebuilding our humanity as a nation.
