It's just really tragic that after all the horrors of the last 1,000 years, we can't leave behind something as primitive as government sponsored execution.
Frank Thompson, former superintendent at the Oregon State Penitentiary was interviewed on the BBC Outlook programme by Matthew Bannister. Below is the radio broadcast.
As the man in charge of the Oregon State Penitentiary, Frank Thompson presided over the only two executions carried out there over 50 years. That was in the late 1990s. Frank continued working in the law enforcement system until his retirement in 2010. Since then he has spoken out against the death penalty, and particularly the negative impact it has on those who have to carry it out.
